In English, when you say things about the past, you should use the simple past tense in your sentence.  But a lot of students of mine, especially beginners, are fond of saying 'go' when they should have said 'went'. From the website of EnglishClub is a nice lesson on using the simple past. To read it, just click here.  You can learn more about the structure and the use of the simple past tense. And you can also try their simple past quiz.
